Asian Carp in Delta Lakes

JACKSON – The Mississippi River has receded and biologists with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks are assessing fish populations in Delta lakes following the Flood of 2011. Initial results are interesting.  “Asian carp, both the bighead and their jumping cousins, the silver carp, are likely in every lake connected to the River plus numerous smaller lakes” reported Fisheries Biologist, Nathan Aycock. “I know for certain they are in Bee, Whittington, Beulah, Ferguson, Desoto, Washington, Log Loader and Moon Lakes.  They have also been reported in Tunica Cutoff, Wolf and Broad Lakes, and Lakes Chotard and Albermarle, too” continued Aycock.

Biologist will continue to evaluate changes in sport fish populations as a result of the carp invasion and look for ways to control populations including stocking alligator gar into selected lakes.
